A medication dispensing apparatus in which a dose is set by pulling out an actuator, and then dispensed by pushing in that actuator. In one form, the apparatus is an injector pen with a housing that holds a medicine-filled cartridge. A drive member that engages a plunger of the cartridge axially extends within the housing. An anti-backup member operably engages the drive member to permit forward movement and prevent rearward movement of the drive member within the housing. An actuator axially movable into and out of the housing includes a manually graspable grip portion. When the actuator is moved from a forward position to a rearward position by pulling on the grip portion, a clutch element moves rearward relative to the drive member held by the anti-backup member. When the actuator is subsequently moved from the rearward position to the forward position, the clutch element is moved forward, and due to a catch portion of the clutch element fitting within an indentation of the drive member, the drive member is also moved forward to advance the plunger to force medicine from the cartridge. |
