PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To carry out effective denitration with little nitrous oxide as a by- product even in the low temperature region of about 100-300 deg.C when NOx is removed from exhaust gas. SOLUTION: In a method for denitrating NOx-containing exhaust gas, the proportion of NO2 contained in the exhaust gas is increased with an oxidizing agent or an oxidation catalyst, an organic nitrogen compound having a nitrile group is added as a reducing agent to the exhaust gas and denitration by reduction of the NOx is carried out in the presence of a denitration catalyst in the temperature region of 100-300 deg.C.
