In a nuclear reactor comprising a stack of bars of solid moderator material and a girdle extending about the stack, the girdle comprises a plurality of links, each link being coupled at each end to the next link but one in the girdle, the face of each link bearing on the stack being movable outwardly by the stack against spring pressure. In Fig. 1 each link of the girdle comprises a plate, such as 1a, 1b, 1c, to which a bracket 4 is secured at each end. The end brackets of alternate links are secured together by tie-rods 7 which are tensioned by compression springs acting between collars 12 and bearing plates 11. In another arrangement, Fig. 4, the girdle comprises a number of boxes 19, 20, boxes 19 being connected together by tie-rods 23 passing over boxes 20, and boxes 20 being connected together by tie-rods 24 which pass round boxes 19. The boxes bear against plates 25, which rest against the faces of the moderator stack by means of compression springs 26. |
