PURPOSE: A composition containing an extract of Polygoni Multiflori Radix, Zingiberis Rhizoma or Platycodi Radix having a component for inducing the secretion of IGF-1 is provided which can be orally administered to a person who has low secretion of IGF-1 in the form of a drug or health food. CONSTITUTION: Polygoni Multiflori Radix, Zingiberis Rhizoma, Platycodi Radix or a mixture thereof is heated in water at 60 to 95deg.C to produce a crude extract. Thereafter, the crude extract is filtered with an ultrafiltration membrane with a nominal molecular weight cut-off of 50,000 to 100,000 Daltons. The pharmaceutical composition contains calcium, arginine, lysine, carboxymethyl cellulose or a mixture thereof, together with the above abstract.
