In a method of forming grooves in a blank, groove.forming rollers are brought into repeated rolling engagement with the blank, the roller and blank being progressively moved relative to one another to extend the grooves. Apparatus for rolling teeth on crown wheels G comprises a rotatable carrier 11, Fig. 2, supporting rollers 10 having groove-forming ribs 17. The blank G is detachably mounted on a shaft 13 which is fed axially while continuously rotated at a synchronized speed so that the ribs 17 successively engage in partially formed grooves g. Inaccuracies resulting from the rotation of the blank G may be compensated by mounting the carrier 11 at askew angle. In further modifications a series of blanks may be arranged on a single shaft and the work may remain stationary while the carrier 11 is traversed by a carriage in a direction parallel to the grooves. More than one carrier head may be used or a number of blanks may be arranged around a carrier head so that the rolls 10 engage each blank in turn. Obliquely or helically toothed wheels may be rolled by setting the carrier 11, Fig. 4, at a skew angle and feeding the blank G either axially or parallel to the ribs 17 on the roller 10, the rate of rotation of the blank being arranged to compensate for the skew angle. |
