A method for reducing NOx emissions from a melting or firing furnace, in which surfaces are heated by gas burners operated with fuel gas, air and oxygen, involves supplying a mixture of fuel gas and air to the burners and separately supplying oxygen adjacent the burners. Also claimed is a melting furnace, especially a glass melting furnace, with one or more gas burners (8) which burn fuel gas for flame production near the molten bath surface in an electrically heated melting chamber (2), and which have a nozzle system (12) for blowing fuel gas and combustion air into the melting chamber. One or more oxygen supply nozzles (16) are arranged near the nozzle system (12) and are connected to an oxygen supply (14) for separate introduction of oxygen into the melting chamber (2).
