PURPOSE: A composition containing a compound separated from an extract of Lactuca sativa L. which increases HDLs while lowering LDLs in blood by inhibiting ACAT as an effective ingredient is provided which can be used in prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease capable of controlling the increase in cholesterol level of the blood, or as various adjuvants for reducing cholesterol level of the blood by addition to various food compositions. CONSTITUTION: The therapeutic and prophylactic agent for cardiovascular disease selected from the group consisting of hypercholesterolemia, hyperlipidemia, arteriosclerosis, angina, myocardial infarction and cerebral infarction contains a compound of formula(1). The above compound is prepared by extracting Lactuca sativa L. in 100% methanol, followed by 80% methanol, concentrating under reduced pressure and then purifying.
