A small pit is dug to expose the section of pipe (1) to which the branch (92) is to be fitted, and a lower seat (200) with clamps (16,17) is installed beneath the main pipe. A multipurpose wrench (20) is used to fit a curved plate (91) with the branch pipe onto the upper surface of the main pipe and fixing it to the lower seat. The curved plate is then welded to the main pipe and a hole bored through the wall of the main pipe from inside the branch pipe, which can be fitted with a stopper. Independent claims are also included for a device which fits a pipe branch.
