PURPOSE: A neck protecting apparatus of a headrest for a vehicle is provided to prevent the neck of the passenger from being injured by restricting the head from being pulled back with moving the headrest upward at a rear-end collision. CONSTITUTION: An electronic control unit(11) controls a gas generator(12) according to signals from a collision detecting sensor(10) at a rear-end collision. A headrest(17) moves up to support the head of the passenger by operating a driving unit with gas pressure of the gas generator. The driving unit pushes a disk(19) connected to a support bar(18) of the headrest by driving first and second cylinder units(13,15) with piston rods(14,16). Teeth are formed in the inner periphery of the first cylinder unit and the outer periphery of the piston rod to restrict the piston rod from moving down. The neck is protected with preventing the head of the passenger from being pulled back by moving up the headrest at the rear-end collision.
