PURPOSE: A process for preparing 2,4-diamino-6-(2-methyl-1-imidazol)-S-triazine is provided, thereby the 2,4-diamino-6-(2-methyl-1-imidazol)-S-triazine can be cheaply prepared in higher yield without producing waste organic solvent. CONSTITUTION: The process for preparing 2,4 - diamino - 6 -(2 - methyl - 1 - imidazol) - S - triazine comprises the steps of: reacting 2-methyl imidazol with acrylonitrile to prepare 1-(β-cyano ethyl)-2-methyl imidazol; and reacting 1-(β-cyano ethyl)-2-methyl imidazol which is not separated from the starting compounds with dicyano diamide to prepare 2,4-diamino-6-(2-methyl-1-imidazol)-S-triazine, wherein the second reaction is carried out in the presence of sodium hydroxide; and the amount of sodium hydroxide used is 0.1 to 0.2 moles per 1 mole of 1-(β-cyano ethyl)-2-methyl imidazol.
