PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pseudo medium tone processing method and its apparatus for reducing a storage capacity of storing processed image data required when the pseudo medium tone processing is conducted. SOLUTION: In the pseudo medium tone processing where image data having already been subjected to pseudo medium tone processing are stored and the data are used for reference for succeeding pseudo medium tone processing, a data conversion section 205 reduces a prescribed number of image data from sets of the image data so as to decrease a bit width n of the image data subjected to pseudo medium tone processing to (n-1), a multi-value processed image data storage section 203 stores the image data whose bit width is decreased, and when a multiplexer 206 references the image data for succeeding pseudo medium tone processing, the data conversion section 205 restores the stored image data whose bit width is decreased to the original image data with the original bit width and uses the original image data for the pseudo medium tone processing.
