PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the occurrence of color mixture in a development cartridge by normally rotating the developer carrier of the developing device of an image forming apparatus while development is not carried out. SOLUTION: The developing device is provided with a plurality of development cartridges 24 having a roller-shaped developer carrier 25 and a roller- shaped developer layer regulating member pressed against the developer carrier 25, along the rotating direction of an image carrier 12. During development, selected development cartridges are successively moved to development positions by using driving transfer to the developer carrier, and the developer carrier is normally rotated, and the thickness of a developer to be carried is regulated by a developer layer regulating member to stop the rotation. The developer which has the regulated thickness is adhered and an electrostatic latent image on the image carrier is formed into a visible image. While the development is not carried out, the developer carriers which the development cartridges have are rotated reversely and sequentially from development cartridges provided at the downstream side in the rotating direction of the image carrier, and the developer carrier is normally rotated after the developer layer regulating member is rotated together. |
