The fabrication of a light metal honeycomb structure by laser welding consists of: (1) forming, by plastic deformation, several segments from a light metal strip with a predefined width corresponding to the thickness of the honeycomb structure, in order to give a corrugated or crenellated longitudinal profile to each segment; (2) feeding and positioning a first segment to a laser welding station; (3) feeding and positioning a second segment to the laser welding station so that the hollows of the corrugations or crenellations of the second segment coincide with the summits of the corrugations or crenellations of the first segment; (4) pressing the first and second segments against each other to put these hollows and summits into contact; (5) laser welding to form a linear transverse joint in each contact zone; (6) stopping the pressing action; (7) repeating the foregoing stages with each subsequent segment to form the complete honeycomb structure. Independent claims are also included for: (a) a device for the fabrication of a light metal honeycomb structure by laser welding; (b) a light metal honeycomb structure thus obtained; (c) a lightweight sandwich panel incorporating such a honeycomb structure. |
