PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the convenience of a telephone system capable of transmitting and receiving mail data at the time of calling or speaking by making the most of the transmitting and receiving function of the mail data. SOLUTION: This portable telephone system inputs melody data and character string data from the outside by an outside operation (110-140), and at the time of inputting a calling command to call the other telephone system (150), encodes the melody data and the character string data into melody transmission data (180), and transmits the melody transmission data to a telephone line network with the telephone number of the calling destination (190). As a result, a calling signal added with the melody data and the character string data is transmitted from the telephone line network to a telephone system at a call incoming side. Then, the call incoming side decodes the melody data added to the calling signal, and reproduces the data as an incoming sound in order to intuitively know the caller. Also, the call incoming side is able to display a message from the caller at a display device in order to confirm requirements. In this case, mail data constituted of a message and a melody can be transmitted at the time of speaking.
