Device for covering an opening in the ground comprises a frame (1) and at least one covering element (2) supported in the frame. For each covering element the device has two at least approximately vertical protrusions (11) and two holes receiving the protrusions to horizontally stabilize the covering element. Either both protrusions, one of the protrusions and one of the holes, or both holes are arranged on the covering element and the corresponding holes or protrusions are arranged opposite on the frame. Preferred Features: The frame and/or the covering element are made of cast material without further processing, especially iron or plastic. The protrusions are pin-like and preferably have a conical end region (111) for easier insertion into the corresponding hole. The protrusions engage in the holes with horizontal play of less than 1 mm.
