PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electric discharge lamp lighting device that can keep a stable lighting state of the electric discharge lamp when modulating and lighting the electric discharge lamp. SOLUTION: An inverter 3 converts the output of a DC power supplier 2 to a high-frequency AC voltage and outputs the AC voltage to an electric discharge lamp La. A dimmer state detector 7 detects the lighting state of the electric discharge lamp La by detecting such a signal (for example, a lamp voltage) that the signal level thereof is varied in accordance with the dimmer level of the electric discharge lamp La. Normally, a dimmer signal limiter 8 directly outputs the dimmer signals inputted from a dimmer signal generator 6 to a controller 5. When the dimmer level of the electric discharge lamp La detected by the dimmer detector 7 is lower than a predetermined lower limit level, the dimmer signal limiter 8 limits the value of the dimmer signal S to the value corresponding to the lower limit level and outputs it to the controller 5.
