PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To embed prescribed information to an image without causing a sense of incongruity in the image. SOLUTION: In the image processing method and apparatus that attaches a prescribed signal to an image signal, a received image signal is divided into a plurality of blocks, an average vector of respective observation pattern feature quantity spaces of a plurality of the blocks is obtained, and a first mahalanobis distance between a reference vector with the same dimension as that of the observation pattern feature quantity space and an average vector of a reference pattern feature quantity space with the same dimension as that of the observation pattern feature quantity space are obtained. Then a second mahalanobis distance between the average vector of the observation pattern feature quantity space and the reference vector is obtained. The entire observation pattern feature quantity space is moved so that the difference between the first and second mahalanobis distances reaches a prescribed value depending on the prescribed signal imbedded to the image, and the image signal is revised depending on the movement of the entire observation pattern feature quantity space.
