PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide constitution which can vary transmission line capacity in real time according to the traffic of input signals for a virtual connection path system of an SDH transmission system. SOLUTION: A transmission path is provided with extra paths VC-4#17 and VC-4#18 in addition to virtual connection paths VC-4#1 to VC-4#16 for normal use and when the traffic of input signals increases, the extra paths are automatically incorporated and used for signal transmission in addition to the virtual connection paths for normal use by carrying out a specific sequence between a transmission and a reception side.
