PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which can prevent a transfer defect caused when the tip of an electrode for transfer electric field production begins to come into contact with a transfer member and retransfer caused right before the rear end of the electrode for transfer electric field production leaves the transfer member to form am image of high picture quality. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus is equipped with a recording medium conveyance body which carries a recording medium where a toner image is transferred and circulates and moves in a specific circulatory direction or an intermediate transfer body to which the toner image is transferred directly and which circulates and moves in the specific circulatory direction, and the recording medium conveyance body or intermediate transfer body has a plurality of electrodes separated from one another in the circulatory movement direction and is equipped with a voltage applying means which applies a transfer voltage to the electrodes of the recording medium conveyance body or intermediate transfer body; and the voltage applying means applies the transfer voltage which is larger at the tip of each electrode in the circulatory movement direction than at the rear-end part.
