A system and a method for imprinting a digital image with an identifier (340) using black metamers (325). Black metamers (325) provide an addition to the radiometric signaure of the original d igital image that is imperceptible to human vision. The identifier (340) may include, but is not limited to, watermarks, fingerprints, textual additions, steganography, and identification tags. The digital image is processed (310) and imprinted frame by frame (355) by adding black metamers (325) to the fundamental metamer (310) of selected pixels in a frame. The black metamers (325) imprint the identifier (340) into the digital image without changing the way in which the image is perceived visually. To verify that a copy of a digital image imprinted with an identifier (340) has been made, the suspected copy of the digital image is stripped of all fundamental metamers (310) to reveal only its' black metamers (325). The presence of an identifier (340) within the black me tamers(325) is evidence that the suspected copy is in fact a copy of a digital image. .
