A system and method for interactive instruction in the learning of a musical instrument, which also allows musicians at geographically remote locations to collaborate in the creation and performance of musical works. The inventi on provides a server-based musical "classroom" to which student musicians can connect via a global computer network, such as the Internet, in order to obtain personalized, interactive musical instruction on the instrument of their choosing and by t he instructor of their choosing. The server supports host software which simulates a selected environment and even a selected tutor, for example a famous musicia n, to interact with the student. Client software interposes a graphical representation of the student into the virtual "classroom" with the virtual tutor, generating as closely as possible the reality of an actual classroom experience and allowing the student watch the virtual tutor playing the musical instrument from different perspectives . In the collaborative embodiment, the method and system of the invention generates a graphical representation of each musician on a simulated or virtual stage, i n real-time, and mixes the musical performance of each musician into a collaborative grou p performance in the virtual setting of their choosing, which optionally can b estreamed live to an audience who has access to the virtual stage. The musical performances of the individual instrumentalists can also be combined with pre-recorded or synthesized performances by virtual instrumentalists, allowing the musicians to perform with virtual representations of their favourite artists.
