Unsaturated ketones are prepared by reacting in the liquid phase a cycloalkanone containing 5 to 12 carbons in the ring with a catalytic amount of a compound of Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zr, Cd, Sn, Mo or W. Suitable catalysts include carboxylates (preferably along with the corresponding acid), organic complexes (e.g. with 1,3-diketones or EDTA), alkoxides, polyacids and heteropolyacids of the above metals. In examples, cyclohexanone is converted to 2-(1-cyclohexenyl)- cyclohexanone, which may then be catalytically dehydrogenated to o-phenylphenol. The cyclohexanone starting material may be mixed with cyclohexanol which is inert in the process.
