Edge detector for detection of the edge of an object comprises a first optical fiber with receiver (104) and transmitter (106) ends for transmission of light from a laser source (108). A second optical fiber (110) is arranged on the other side of a detection area and transmits light from a receiving end (112) to a transmission end (114) where the light is coupled to an optical detector (116), the output of which is proportional to the light received. When an object is moved between the optical fibers light received falls and the edge of an object is indicated. Independent claims are made for a device for positioning the edges of objects, an edge detector with a mirror arrangement, a system for detecting the edge of an object and a method for positioning the edge of an object.
