Production of styryl dyes (I) comprises reacting a 2-methyl-4-(2-phenoxyethylamino) benzaldehyde (II) with malononitrile in the presence of butanol. Production of compounds of formula (I) comprises reacting a 2-methyl-4-(2-phenoxyethylamino) benzaldehyde of formula (II) with malononitrile in the presence of butanol.
