The machine tool, with a spindle to take a clamped tool and a rotating table to take a clamped workpiece, has a workpiece clamping plate (3) locked (5,6,7) against rotation against the housing of the table when in the working position. The clamping plate can only be rotated when the rotary lock is released. The clamping plate is on a shaft (2), which extends through the rotating table housing. The shaft has a chain wheel (4), at the end away from the clamping plate, with a chain (11) around it. Two further chain wheels (12) define a horizontal path section, for the engagement of a carrier (13) at the spindle head. The rotary motor drive for the clamping plate is effected also through a movement of the spindle head.
