Method for cooling a linear accelerator in which the linear accelerator is cooled during operating phases with the resultant heat energy stored in a buffer store (3). During cooling phases the heat is transported away from the buffer store using a heat exchanger (2-5) arrangement. The cooling phases are distinct from the operating phases or only partially overlap. The invention also relates to a corresponding cooling system for cooling a linear accelerator, which comprises a buffer store for heat extracted from the accelerator during operating phases using a cooling unit (1) and a heat exchanger for transporting heat away from the buffer store during cooling phases. The inventive cooling system is based on the fact that patient treatment periods are short, only very rarely exceeding five minutes, with such periods followed by long standby periods, during which the next patient is prepared. Thus a large quantity of cooling water can be provided for instant short term cooling, with the water then cooled again during a standby phase.
