An unwanted/interfering signal detection device (UISDD) (6,7) determines whether a filtering device (FD) (5) can satisfactorily filter out interference in a received or derived signal. The FD has a single-dimension statistical filter (SDSF) with weighting to select frequency and a linear filter downstream to the SDSF for compensating for distortion caused by the SDSF. An analog-digital converter (4) generates a digital signal fed directly to the UISDD. Independent claims are also included for a data communications system with a transmitter and a receiver and for a method of receiving data by means of the receiving device.
