PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a copolymer latex excellent in mechanical stability, dry pick strength and brister resistance which can be suitably used as a binder for paper coating, especially off-set rotary print. SOLUTION: The latex having a gel content of 0-10 wt.% is obtained by emulsion polymerization of a monomer (100 pts.wt. in total) comprising an aliphatic conjugated diene-based monomer of 15-60 pts.wt., an ethylenic unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer of 0.1-10 pts.wt., an unsaturated monomer having a hydroxyalkyl group of 0.5-15 pts.wt. and other copolymerizable monomer of 15-84.4 pts.wt. In the latex, the unsaturated monomer is more than the ethylenic unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer by pts.wt.
