PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a recorder, e.g. a laser printer, in which a test pint can be carried out by some encoded pattern of presence/absence of a sheet and the cost can be reduced by eliminating a test print switch. SOLUTION: Code data from a host computer 1 is received by the ASIC 21 of a printer controller 2 and converted into dot data before being written in a page RAM 22. When a page of code data is converted into dot data, a print signal 51 and an image data signal 52 are transmitted to a printer engine 3 where image data is printed on a recording sheet. The ASIC 31 of a printer engine 3 detects presence/absence of a recording sheet on a tray and prints the state information of the printer controller 2 on a recording sheet by its presence/absence pattern. |
