PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus capable of melting and/or purifying high purity optical glass. SOLUTION: This invention relates to an apparatus for melting high purity optical glass using skull melting process and/or for treating thus produced melt in the following purification or homogenizing step. This apparatus is characterized by using a metal pipe which has no ion staining glass on the surface. Such a metal pipe for the skull crucible can be formed from non-oxidizable or hardly oxidizable material, e.g. platinum or platinum alloy.
