PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve fuel consumption and to suppress the deterioration of a catalyst. SOLUTION: A control device of the internal combustion engine is provided with a catalyst arranged in an exhaust system of the internal combustion engine and purifying exhaust gas, an intake valve and an exhaust valve arranged in each cylinder of the internal combustion engine, a catalyst temperature detection means for detecting the temperature of the catalyst, and a fuel cutting off means for stopping supply of fuel to the internal combustion engine in response to a predetermined operation state. The control device shuts at least one of the intake valve and the exhaust valve and prohibits the introduction of the exhaust gas into the catalyst when the detected temperature of the catalyst is higher than a predetermined value when the supply of the fuel is stopped. Because the introduction of the exhaust gas into the catalyst is prohibited, the catalyst is not exposed to oxygen-excessive atmosphere and the deterioration of the catalyst is suppressed. |
