PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide lung diagnostic assays in general, and particularly provide a lung diagnostic assay in which lung mucus secretions are hydrated to facilitate collection thereof. SOLUTION: The pharmaceutical composition useful for promoting of the obtaining of a mucus sample from at least one lung of a subject comprising a compound represented by formula (I) [wherein X1 , X2 and X3 are each independently OH or SH; R1 is selected from a group consisting of O, imide, methylene and a dihalomethylene; R2 is H or Br] or its pharmaceutically acceptable salt in an amount effective to stimulate lung mucous secretions in at least one lung of the subject and/or stimulate cilia beat frequency in the lung.
