PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method by which 2-oxocarboxylic acid esters can simply and industrially advantageously be produced in good yield. SOLUTION: This method for producing the 2-oxocarboxylic acid esters represented by general formula (I) (wherein, R<1> and R<2> denote each an alkyl group which may have a substituent, an alkenyl group which may have a substituent group, an alkynyl group which may have a substituent, an aryl group which may have a substituent or an aralkyl group which may have a substituent) is characterized as follows. 2-Hydroxycarboxylic acid esters represented by general formula (II) are oxidized in the presence of a nitroxy radical represented by general formula (III) (wherein, R<3> denotes hydrogen atom, an alkoxy group, an aralkyloxy group, an acyloxy group or hydroxy group), a hopochlorite, a metal bromide and water under conditions of the pH of the reactional system within the range of 5-7.
