PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a stable phosphorescent compound useful in organic electroluminescent devices and the like. SOLUTION: This phosphorescent compound is a metal complex compound where a bidentate ligand or tridentate ligand of formula (i) or (ii) (Q1 and Q2 are each an aromatic ring or heterocyclic ring or derivative thereof, at least one of them being a benzene ring or derivative thereof; Z, Z1 and Z2 are each C or any atom or atomic group; and W1 to W4 are each C or an atom other than C) is of a cyclic structure, respectively, in which the ortho site with respect to the position where Q1 and Q2 are bound to Z or Z1 and Z2 , also in the case of the tridentate ligand, W1 , are bound to the central transition metal atom M. This compound is stable, having phosphorescent fumction. Since in the above ligands, the ring such as aromatic ring is bound via Z, or Z1 and Z2 , this compound is stable with a wide phosphoresce wavelength spectrum.
