PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a medicine for treating cancer constituted so that the medicine can strongly lead the cancer cell to the cell death even if the cancer cell resists to a conventional anticancer agent while reducing the side effects, and further to provide a medicine for preventing the cancer, capable of very easily and effectively carrying out the prophylaxis of cancer of the digestive system. SOLUTION: This medicine for treating the cancer contains a stilbene tetramer compound having a structure represented by formula (1) (wherein, R is hydrogen, a methyl group or an acetyl group; and C1 and C2 , or D1 and D2 may be exchanged), or a stilbene trimer compound represented by formula (2) (wherein, R is hydrogen, a methyl group or an acetyl group) as an active ingredient. When the medicine for treating the cancer is intravenously administered or directly administered to the carcinoma tissue, the blood concentration of the active ingredient is preferably regulated so as to be within the range of 1-20μM. The medicine for preventing the cancer contains the active ingredient, and is constituted so that the medicine will be orally ingested mainly for the prophylaxis of the cancer of the digestive system. The administration of the medicine for preventing the cancer is preferably regulated so that the concentration of the active ingredient in the stomach will be within the range of 0.01-5μM.
