PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for obtaining a composite material, in which particles of Invar, a low thermal expansion material, are dispersed in metallic Cu, and of which the coefficient of linear expansion can be optionally determined. SOLUTION: This method for manufacturing the composite material, in which the Invar particles are dispersed in metallic Cu, comprises pressing the particles of Invar, the low thermal expansion material, to particulate metallic Cu, coating the Invar particles with the metallic Cu to form the composite powder 3, and sintering and rolling the composite powder. In addition, the coefficient of linear expansion can be set optionally, because the volume ratio of the Invar particles and the composite Cu can be adjusted optionally by changing the mixture ratio of the Cu particles to the Invar particles, in the above process for forming the composite powder.
