Process for optimizing the quality of cast strands (1) in a casting machine having a mold (2) comprises deforming the casting strands below the mold in the residual solidification region in a reducing plane using adjustable rollers (4, 5) to improve the inner quality. An independent claim is also included for a device used for optimizing the quality of cast strands in a casting machine. Preferred Features: The casting cross section is deformed by the rollers tilted by 90[deg] from the reducing plane to give a value of 5-60% of the main reduction in the region of the residual solidification.
