The wall comprises a section (3) which is accommodated in a trough open at the top in a foundation and out of which it is lifted hydraulically until its bottom flange (5) forms a sealed joint with a covering flange on the trough. The section passes through an opening in the trough. When fully retracted a cover (9) on the section seals off the opening, in which it is a flush fit, the section resting on a float (4) fits in the trough and movable in the vertical direction. At one or both end faces each wall-section has a sealing strip extending for its full height (h), and extended and retracted in the horizontal direction by pneumatic rams (20) at intervals in the vertical direction. The ram-piston rods pass through the web of a channel-section (19) forming the wall-section end face, and which encloses the sealing strip in the retracted position. The float can consist of a hollow body closed at the top by the wall-section bottom flange and with a bottom opening, being filled with air.
