A method and apparatus for encoding an interlaced video signal into a progressive signal uses a transformation that combines at least two fields (eg n and n+1) into a 'superframe' (m) in such a way that results in adjacent lines from a field being adjacent in the superframe. The apparatus also provides an inverse transformation for the decoding of the resultant signal back into interlaced format.
