PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent generation of a water hammer phenomenon by a liquid phase operating medium contained in a cylinder of a rotary fluid machinery. SOLUTION: This rotary fluid machinery comprises: a rotor 41; cylinders 44 provided to the rotor 41; pistons 47 slidably fitted to the cylinders 44, a power converting device performing, by a movement of the piston 47, energy conversion between a pressure energy of a gas phase operation medium and a rotation energy of the rotor 41; and a rotation valve V provided with a gas phase operation medium supply port S2 and a gas phase operation medium discharge port 85a for supplying/discharging the gas phase operation medium to/from the cylinder 44, accompanying rotation of the rotor 41. In the power converting device, the radial movement of the piston 47 is nearly stopped from a time when the gas phase operation medium discharge port 85a of the rotation valve V is closed to a time when the gas phase operation medium supply port S2 is opened, that is, a period in which a liquid phase operation medium liquefied inside the cylinders 44 is contained, whereby the water hammer phenomenon is prevented.
