PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper feeder, which raises a paper upper surface position to a position higher than a paper feed lower limit position where normal paper feed can be conducted by elevation control of a paper feed table, capable of reducing time lag in raising the paper feed table in response to descent of the paper upper surface position by paper feed operation. SOLUTION: A control part 16 feeds a weak current to an elevator motor 12 and makes the elevator motor in a raise preparatory state at a time when the paper upper surface position detected by an upper surface position sensor 15 descends to a quasi paper feed lower limit position placed in a position a little higher than the lower limit position where the normal paper feed can be conducted. When it is detected that the paper upper surface position descends lower than the paper feed lower limit position, the control part 16 feeds a full-scale current to the elevator motor 12. At that time, since the elevator motor 12 is already in the raise preparatory state, the motor 12 rotates immediately, and raises the paper feed table 11. Therefore, the time lag in raising the paper feed table 11 is reduced.
