A rotary damper 10 comprises a cam device 11, an elastic biassing member 12 for urging the cam device 11 in a predetermined direction, and a storage case 13 for storing the cam device 11 and biassing member 12. The cam device 11 is supported by the storage case 13 to be movable only along the axial direction of the storage case 13. The rotary damper 10 can be incorporated in an assist grip (see Fig. 4) for the interior of a motor vehicle, the rotary damper providing a damping force which returns the assist grip from an operational position to an original rest position.
