PURPOSE: A handoff performing apparatus and method of a mobile communication system are provided to allow a terminal to quickly search a base station for handoff by effectively setting a frame period for transmitting data and a frame period for not transmitting data. CONSTITUTION: A base station transmits data for an entire frame period and a terminal receives it(711,713). The terminal measures a signal strength of the base station in a current communication, and if the measured value is smaller than a pre-set level, the terminal informs the base station accordingly(715). The base station checks whether a handoff is requested on the basis of the measured value(717). If a handoff is requested, the base station transmits various parameter information required for handoff to the terminal(719). The terminal receives the parameter information and transmits an ack signal(721). The base station checks whether the ack signal is received(723). If the ack signal is received, the base station transmits a frame data with a transfer rate as fast as T/Ton times during a Ton time at a front section(D1)(0,Ton) of a first frame(725). The terminal receives the frame data(727). The terminal measures a signal strength of an adjacent base station during a Toff time at a rear section(D2)(Ton,T) of the first frame to check whether a base station for handoff is detected(729). If a base station for its handoff is detected, the terminal transmits a base station detection message to the base station and performs a hand off(737).
