The present invention relates to a purified leukocyte substance isolated from animals or humans, as well as fragments and/or derivatives/analogues thereof, and a method to isolate and purify this substance. Furthermore, the present invention relates to a pharmaceutical preparation comprising the substance/fragments/derivatives, as well as methods for isolating and purifying said substance, the use of said substance and a method for treating, preventing, inhibiting or ameliorating infections or conditions in a human or an animal caused by microorganisms.
