1,250,291. Aralkyl alcohols. ENGELHARD MINERALS & CHEMICALS CORP. 13 March, 1970 [14 March, 1969], No. 12298/70. Heading C2C. Aralkyl alcohols are prepared by hydrogenating an aralkyl ketone in the presence of a catalyst comprising osmium, preferably supported on carbon or alumina. The process is suitable for the reduction of ketones of the formula where R<SP>111</SP> is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, aryl, benzyl or alkoxy group, R and R<SP>1</SP> are each a hydrogen atom or an alkyl or aryl group, R<SP>11</SP> is an alkyl group and n is an integer from 1 to 20. In an example phenylisopropanol is prepared from phenylacetone. Other specified starting materials are p-tolylacetone, m-phenylphenylacetone, o-benzylphenylacetone, benzyl acetone, p-ethylbenzylacetone, asym. diphenylacetone, sym-dibenzylacetone; 5-phenylpentan- 2-one, 6-phenylhexan-3-one. |
