The invention relates to modified cellulose ethers, obtainable by reaction of cellulose ethers carrying free hydroxy groups with organic, di and or polyfunctional carboxylic acids that have been activated by reacting them with nitrogenous compounds. The invention also relates to a method for producing the inventive ethers. The modified cellulose ethers are characterized by an improved miscibility, they do not aggregate when stirred into aqueous solutions and have a delayed initial swelling behavior.
