1317811 Catalytic processes D BRYCESMITH and A GILBERT 19 April 1971 [8 April 1970] 16693/70 Heading C2C [Also in Divisions C5 and C7] The preparation of organic compounds is catalysed by activated transition metals prepared by reacting, in a liquid phase, at least one compound of the metal and an aryl-metallic compound containing an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal other than magnesium and an aromatic ring structure capable of sustaining a magnetically induced ring current (see Divisions C6-C7). Specified metals are silver, copper, gold, platinum, palladium, rhodium, ruthenium, iron, cobalt, nickel, manganese, chromium, molybdenum, tungsten and rhenium. Specified reactions are the conversion of isopropanol to acetone at 80‹ C. using activated gold, or at 20‹ C. using palladium or platinum; conversion of ethanol to acetaldehyde at 20‹ C. using iron, cobalt, nickel, platinum, palladium, ruthenium, rhodium or gold; the oxidation of methanol to dimethyl formal and formaldehyde using gold; the oxidation of ethylene to ethylene oxide in the range 180‹ to 200‹ C., using silver, and the conversion of toluene to benzoic acid in the range 80‹ to 100‹ C., using platinum. |
