PURPOSE: An IP network using an SNMP and a method for managing the same are provided to prevent an error of a trap message and improve the efficiency of IP network management. CONSTITUTION: A plurality of agents(1) are mounted at a plurality of IP(Internet Protocol) network elements for monitoring the status and failure situation of the IP network elements. If the plurality of agents(1) senses the failure situation, the plurality of agents(1) generate and transmit SNMP(Simple Network Management Protocol) version-2 trap PDU(Packet Data Unit) messages storing failure occurrence time, an address of the corresponding agent, and information related to actual failure situation. If a manager(2) receives the SNMP version-2 trap PDU message from a random agent, the manager(2) confirms the address of the agent in the SNMP version-2 trap PDU message and manages the failure situation of the corresponding agent. A proxy(3) relays the SNMP version-2 trap PDU message between the plurality of agents(1) and the manager(2).
