PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gas discharge tube which realizes high luminance and makes startup property good. SOLUTION: In a gas discharge tube 1, a first opening 18 and a second opening 13 cooperate to constrict a discharge path so as to obtain high-intensity light. Even if the discharge path is constricted, so as for startup property to be kept good, a specified voltage is applied from the outside to a second discharge path restriction part 12. This creates so aggressive startup discharge that can pass through the first opening 18. In addition, since the area of the second opening 13 is larger than the area of the first opening 18, the startup discharge of the lamp is not restricted by the second opening 13. This makes the startup discharge pass through the insides of the first and second openings 13, 18 smoothly, so that the discharge between a cathode 20 and an anode 8 can start quickly. Therefore, the startup property is kept good without increasing a voltage at the startup of the lamp remarkably, and the high luminance is progressed with expanding the discharge restriction part.
