PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the image quality of composite video materials by discriminating between an SDTV (standard TV) signal and an HDTV (high-definition TV) signal on a receiver side, converting a component type signal into a composite type signal when the inputted signal is an SDTV signal, and using a high- performance YC separator. SOLUTION: In a television receiver in which a receiver of digital BS (broadcasting satellite) or digital terrestrial broadcasting is connected, the digital broadcast receiver has a composite signal output 102 and a component signal output 103, and also has a switching circuit 110 for switching an output between a first component signal from the output 103 and a second component signal obtained, by applying three-dimensional YC separation and chroma-decoding to the output 102. Further, the receiver has a frequency discrimination circuit 105 for judging the first component signal to be an SDTV signal or an HDTV signal. If the circuit 105 discriminates as the SDTV signal, the circuit 110 selects a second component signal and switches, thereby improving the image quality of the composite video materials.
